Although we shouldn’t raise our kids to be chocoholics early in life—babies certainly aren’t anywhere near ready for their first taste of our favorite indulgence—who says moms-to-be aren’t supposed to eat chocolate? Quite the opposite, in fact! (Pregnancy and Chocolate - Myths and Reality) So if you’re headed to a baby shower, brighten up mom-to-be’s day with one of the following chocolate treats. If you’re the mom-to-be herself (or you’re throwing the shower), how about passing out some of these chocolate treats and cute favors to your girlfriends?
Zingerman’s Zzang! Candy Bars
Zingerman’s Bakehouse had its start as a deli in Michigan in the early ’80s and blossomed into a bakery with fresh breads and pastries a decade later. We’re so thankful they did because we think these Zzang! Candy Bars are a fun, delicious addition to any party, a baby shower included. These old-fashioned candy bars have been praised by the author of History of Candy, Beth Kimmerle, as reminiscent of "1930s bars that were hand-made, slab-style with candy love." There’s the original Zzang! candy bar, a honey nougat with peanut butter rolled into caramel and peanuts and dipped in 64% dark Ecuadorian chocolate. Zzang!’s ca$hew cow is a lot of fun. Our mouths melted at the cashew brittle and crisped rice roasted cashews dipped in chocolate. Buy a handful of both in a velvet gift bag and it’s the perfect gift for any occasion! You can buy them online or look for the Zzang! Candy bars at select stores across the nation, including Whole Foods in New York. Look for the newest Zzang! candy bar, what the fudge?, too!
Personalized Baby Shower Hershey’s Chocolate
We can always count on the one of our favorite staples of chocolate, Hershey’s, to be there for us when we celebrate! If it’s not pastel arrangements of blue- or pink-wrapped kisses to pass out in lieu of that horrible cigar, it’s completely personalized favors to pass out in goodie bags at a baby shower. A lot of party favor companies offer their own version of personalized sleeves for baby shower chocolate bars (with or without the candy itself), but we decided to go with the popular party and corporate favors company Beau-coup. Apparently even Tori Spelling used their favors for her baby shower! Beau-coup’s Personalized Baby Shower Hershey’s Chocolate comes in incredibly adorable designs of bears, babies, ducks, elephants, lambs, strollers, and more. Personalize kisses, miniatures, and 1.55-ounce and 5-ounce Hershey’s candy bars with the name of the parents-to-be and the date of the shower. It was impossible to keep the chocolate as a keepsake (too tempting!), but the wrappers looked stunning in our baby shower scrapbook.
And by the way, we couldn’t resist giving out these other Beau-coup "chocolate" treats: Towel Cakes! Arranged to look like slices of cakes, these fluffy hand towels made our girlfriends laugh. They’re practical and cute—almost too cute to use!
Chocolate-Covered Sunflower Seeds
A perfect gift for both mom-to-be and for the girls at the baby shower, the Gourmet Sunflower Seeds offered by Best Baby Shower was a surprise treat. We’re used to chocolate-covered nuts, sure, but sunflower seeds? Well, in the spirit of the bright new bundle headed our way, we decided to give these pastel-colored chocolate treats a try. Available in both "It’s a Girl!" and "It’s a Boy!" varieties (and you can always mix them up if the mom’s still keeping it a surprise), 1.3 ounces of chocolate-covered sunflower seeds are arranged in cute three-inch jars. The only problem is the three-inch jars just aren’t enough! These were easily the most addictive hand food at the baby shower. Moms with toddlers report that tots find chocolate-covered sunflower seeds addicting, too. And at least with the sunflower seed centers, they aren’t a totally unhealthy sugar rush for the little ones. Hmm… So if you get a mom-to-be hooked on these, she might know just the right chocolate snack to introduce her baby to a few years down the line! From one chocoholic to another, passing on the gift of chocolate might just be the greatest gift you can give!
